CarbonEconomic is an Activity Based costing and Financial Modelling solution which has been conceived, developed and implemented with blue chip clients over the past 6 years. Cyest has distilled 9 years worth of spreadsheet based modelling IP into an all encompassing modelling solution with an intuitive business user interface. Using Object Orientated Modelling (OOM) methodologies a user can dynamically create a financial model, based on their organisation’s specific operational structure and environment, without having to concern themselves with the typical problems found in spreadsheet solutions – i.e. defining the logic, formula / logic errors, aggregation errors, scalability issues, inadequate business rules, finger trouble, auditabilityetc.
Simply put, CarbonEconomic is embedded with the modelling IP allowing users to focus on configuring the enterprise, running scenarios and analysing the outputs and not building model logic.
Technology
The CarbonEconomic is solution that has been developed on the CarbonLogic modelling platform developed by Cyest Corporation.
CarbonLogic leverages two well established and proven modelling frameworks and combines them into one platform in a way that no other platform or product does. These are:
- Object orientated modelling – a framework that revolutionised the way software is developed
- Dimensional modelling – a framework pioneered to allow for the modelling of very large data-sets within the date-warehouse context
- Templates – a framework that allows the customisation and development of standard templates that can be used to develop models. In this way intellectual property can be ‘packaged’ for re-use.
To achieve its objective, CarbonLogic comprises of the following components of software:
- The engine (CarbonLogic) – which contains and calculates a model
- Graphite – the user environment to build templates and models
- UIP – the user interface environment that is configured to function on top of templates and models
It is built on the latest version of the .NET platform. Its architectural design allows it to run as a standalone desktop application or as server-based enterprise level deployment. Its data and file storage structure is optimised for performance and efficient memory management. It provides an open interface to import and export data into relational database structures.
Value Proposition
CarbonEconomic empowers financial and operational departments within your organisation to build robust, reliable, scalable and auditable Activity Based enterprise modelling solutions with ease. In essence, CarbonEconomic removes the effort and time required in building a model (with regards to attributes, formulas, aggregations, etc.) and rather frees a manager to place more focus on configuring a representative model, based on sound activity costing principles and to the appropriate level of detail (from high level down to first principles). This enables managers to utilise the model in such a manner that through ‘tweaking’ business rules, schedules or assumptions an optimal project evaluation can be achieved, providing the maximum value for share holders.
The CarbonEconomic solution integrates into existing mine planning solutions and therefore allows integrated budgeting, planning and forecasting for all time horizons from a short-term budget to life of mine. In addition operational optimisation, ‘what-if’ analysis and OPEX modelling can be performed.
Benefits
The following list highlights the benefits of utilising CarbonEconomic in the business:
- Models created are highly robust, reliable and scalable across the enterprise. .
- The tool has been developed with highest level of standards and quality, providing user friendly graphical interfaces that aid and guide the user though the process of configuring and updating the model.
- CarbonEconomic models are built on the activity based costing framework, allowing each resource / cost within any given activity to be driven by appropriate drivers, leading to accurate and representative cost structures and forecasts.
- CarbonEconomic allows for a highly collaborative environment when inputs from model need to be coordinated between different departments within the organisation (i.e. Finance, HR, Planning and Ops can all collaborate within the same server-based solution).
- CarbonEconomic has encapsulated all the business rules required to model cost dynamics within an organisation, and through using the object orientated modelling framework the tool allows organisations to re-use IP gained in previously configured models. Thus, driving corporate control of logic, business rules and structure throughout the entire organisation.
- An integrated budgeting, planning and forecasting environment using CarbonEconomic will allow true dynamic or rolling budgeting on a monthly basis as the production plan is updated.
Key Features
- Object Oriented Modelling Framework
- CarbonEconomic utilises the CarbonLogic modelling engine, which in essence provides a framework to develop models in an object orientated manner. In essence, what this means is that once a user has defined the logic and structure for key components for their model, the IP can be ‘packaged’ and reused multiple times without having to worry about the integrity of the model (i.e. no referencing or aggregation errors).
- Scalable and Reliable Solutions
- Users have not need worry about creating model that are too big or unmanageable by the software. CarbonEconomic allows users to build models to any scale having the only limitation being the memory capacity of the machine being used.
- Activity Based Costing
- CarbonEconomic has been developed such that all models are created according to activity based costing principles. The system extends these principles though allowing users to customize the calculations used to derive the drivers used by each cost element.
- Sarbanes Oxley Compliance
- CarbonEconomic provides a secure platform to design and configure financial models. The system has secure user access controls and all models created by the tool are fully auditable.
- Seamless Data Exchange
- Having the solution based on SQL, allows for seamless integration to and from existing ERP, Production and Reporting systems within the organisation. CarbonEconomic also provides the ability to extract all data to Excel in order to evaluate results or do ‘slice and dice reporting’.
- Utilisation of Templates
- All input required for the model, such as production data, labour costs, business rules etc., can be exported and imported to and from Excel through the use of automatically generated templates.
- No Black Box Solutions (fully auditable)
- The business rules used within the model are based on an industry norms and do not vary in any way throughout the model. All inputs and outputs to the model can be exported to Excel for evaluation and auditing purposes. Therefore, the CarbonEconomic solution is transparent to all the goings on in the model and does not become just another black box solution.
- User Configurable Reporting
- Having the data residing in SQL means that any reporting platform can access the underlying data to provide customisable, clear, concise and insightful reporting solutions.
- Customisable Code Body
- The CarbonEconomic platform has been developed in a modular manner, allowing for customisable development solutions to be available as options, in order to meet the specific needs of clients (i.e. can be tailored to meet user specific needs).
- Remote Server Functionality
- CarbonEconomic has the capability of loading and running models remotely on a server, using the local machine as a simple interface or client machine. In essence, this means that users do not need to have powerful machines to load and run relatively large models locally.
